Michigan AFL-CIO calls for Tax Hikes

Wonder if the rank and file would support Tax Hikes as enthusiastically as the AFL-CIO leadership?

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan AFL-CIO enters the Labor Day weekend pushing for a tax increase to support state government services and promising to help lawmakers who might face recalls for voting in favor of revenue increases.

"We believe the state needs a new, larger budget," Mark Gaffney, president of the union umbrella organization, said Thursday at a pre-holiday weekend press conference. "We believe there is going to have to be tax revenue enhancements. We are talking to legislators about reforms and reorganizations, but we do not believe for a minute that reforms and reorganization alone will fix an over $1 billion hole. We are concerned that as months go by the hole gets bigger."
