Tenncare financed huge drug habit for TN

Tennessee leads the nation in painkiller prescription increase.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A study by The Associated Press shows the number of prescriptions for painkillers in Tennessee went up by 206% between 1997 to 2005.

The sharp increase in Tennessee was due in large part to the generous drug benefits from TennCare.

A 2003 report from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee concluded patients enrolled in TennCare paid just 1.6% of the cost of their prescriptions, and that contributed to the state's high use of the drugs.
