Shelby County wants 2% tax on eating out

Is this the new sin tax we have heard about to "protect" us from overeating? The Commercial Appeal article doesn't mention that aspect but I am quite sure the point will be raised when the bill is considered in the General Assembly. Again, local politicians let us know they are unwilling to cut the growth in the Government budget but they sure as heck are happy to force taxpayers to cut their family budgets by raising our taxes.

Despite passionate pleas from the restaurant industry, the County Commission gave the initial go-ahead Monday to a prepared food and beverage tax that would hit all bars and restaurants in Shelby County.

Before the tax can be enacted, it will require approval from the state legislature in Nashville and then again from the commission.
