Automatic Gas Tax Hikes approved in TN House

A House subcommittee has quietly approved legislation that would provide for automatic increases in Tennessee's gasoline tax in the future, based on the consumer price index.

The so-called "indexing" plan was introduced Tuesday as an amendment rewriting HB1321 in the House Rural Roads Subcommittee.

As introduced, the bill by Rep. Bill Harmon, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, calls for abolishing a Sandhill Crane specialty license plate.

The rewritten amendment adopted by the committee, which then approved the bill on voice vote, would set up a new system to adjust Tennessee gasoline taxes annually based on the consumer price index.
