Hardin County Citizens Petition to lower sales tax

Most people in Tennessee are not aware that citizens can gather signatures and petition to set the local option sales tax (the portion of the sales tax above the 7% State base.) In Hardin County yesterday citizens petitioned to set the tax at 1 1/2% or 1% lower than the current tax. When the signatures are certified State law requires a referendum to be held to allow voters to make the ultimate decision about the tax rate.

The citizens filing the petition believe that promises made regarding school construction, during the last referendum to raise the tax, were not kept and the sales tax rate should be reduced.

Congrats to Kendrick and Danny and all those Hardin County citizens who worked so hard gathering signatures.
