Pretty much the whole city Govt is going to Jail

UNION, S.C. — People here thought they had seen enough notoriety for a lifetime when, 15 years ago, a young mother namedSusan Smith claimed her two sons had been kidnapped, then admitted that she had actually killed them.

Now, the town of 8,039 is under a dark cloud again.

•The former mayor and the former city zoning and building director are in prison on charges that they took kickbacks from contractors.

•The county supervisor and the county tax assessor were indicted Oct. 5 on charges including extortion and sale of illicit drugs from a county office.

•On the same day, the former sheriff — who persuaded Smith to confess to her crime — was indicted on charges of witness tampering and lying to authorities.

•On Oct. 9, the clerk of court resigned amid an investigation into his office's finances.

Last month it came to this: Republican Gov. Mark Sanford, facing his own huge political and personal problems after admitting to an affair with a woman in Argentina, had to come to town to install a new clerk of court.
