Councilman loses election, collects unemployment

Officials in Rosemead and other Valley cities said they had never heard of a ousted councilman collecting unemployment.

"I thought you serve at the pleasure of the people who elected you. I've never heard of the governor of California receiving unemployment, or the president of the United States receiving unemployment, but I guess city councilmen can," Rosemead councilman Steven Ly said.

Nunez said he also was surprised that he was eligible for unemployment, but he defended his claim.

"I was considered an employee of Rosemead. I devoted all my time to being the best council person I could. I didn't have another job," Nunez said.
