I am alarmed not only at the mayor's proposed 64 cent tax hike, but at his gross insensitivity to the plight of thousands of Chattanooga residents facing their own budget crises. I would urge the mayor to rethink and retract his proposal, and then apologize to the city's residents for his lapse in judgment.
I suggest that Mayor Littlefield take it a step further and get out and about among the working-class residents to find out how they manage when times are hard and the finances tight.
Nothing less than brutal belt-tightening, as most will attest, is the order of the day, Mr. Mayor. Nothing less.
