A group of local Tea Party activists is trying to play the part of Marcy-busters in a political electronic billboard message that has popped up in Toledo.
Seven billboards have begun flashing a message urging area voters to end the tenure in Congress of U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo).
"Stop Spending Our Kids' Money," the sign says. "Vote Her Out in November," says one version. Another says, "Let's Help Her Retire in November."
Miss Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in Congress, is seeking re-election this year to a 15th consecutive term.
A Kaptur spokesman said the billboard campaign is the sign of a trend of polarization rather than persuasion in politics.
The Kaptur message, which appears for eight seconds interchangeably with other paid advertising, depicts a red circle with a diagonal strip over the word "Marcy," as in the logo of the movie Ghostbusters.
The recently formed Northwest Ohio Conservative Coalition paid for the billboards, said Linda Bowyer of the Perrysburg Patriots, assistant treasurer and secretary of the coalition.
"What we're trying to accomplish is to encourage people to think about the congressional election and to think about what's going on in the government and expansion in the role of the government and what role Marcy Kaptur has played in that," Ms. Bowyer said.
