FRANKFORT, Ky. — A measure urging Congress to call a constitutional convention to consider a balanced budget amendment has been approved by the state Senate.
At the urging of U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, the Senate voted 22-16 along party lines to pass a resolution calling for a constitutional convention. In doing so, Paul and other proponents of the measure inadvertently forged an alliance between a coalition of Democrats and tea party Republicans who oppose the idea.
The GOP ushered the measure through the Senate despite opposition from all 15 Democrats in the chamber and a lone Republican, Sen. Julie Denton of Louisville. It now goes to the Democratic-controlled House where its future appears bleak.
