Lugar has a challenger in Indiana Senate Primary

He told the crowd Saturday that he will announce his plans around the state on Feb. 22. “I’ve made the decision,” he said, according to Barb Knochel, who is president of the women’s club and also the Indiana Republican Party’s 4th congressional district chairwoman.

For months, tea party leaders have said they intend to recruit a challenger into the 2012 U.S. Senate primary and unite behind that candidate in hopes of defeating Lugar, the six-term senator.

Speculation that Mourdock would toss his hat into the ring ramped into high gear last week when Politico reported that he was in Washington, D.C. to meet with potential advisers and supporters and that an announcement was forthcoming.
