Public employee unions mean higher taxes and wasted money

Memphis has the highest property taxes in the State.

City Council member Kemp Conrad and Public Works director Dwan Gilliom confirmed this week that in 2005 the city, under then-mayor Willie Herenton, and AFSCME Local 1733, which represents sanitation workers, agreed to not purchase more modern, automated vehicles that require fewer personnel to operate.

The price of that agreement could be high. In addition to the $25.05 fee per home, per month residents pay for solid waste pick-up, taxpayers have subsidized the solid waste operation to the tune of nearly $103 million over the last 10 years.
