Diaz, while earning a $67,000 annual salary, accepted cash from nearly a dozen people in exchange for authorizing them for a Social Security program that provides immediate benefits for individuals who suffer from severe disabilities.
It often takes as long as six months for the payments to be authorized.
One person gave Diaz $5,000 cash, and another $4,000 to use her position to approve immediate payments for them, according to federal officials.
