Losses from an embezzlement scheme at Chancery Court exceed $1 million, according to a claim Shelby County government has filed against its insurance carrier.
Officials said Thursday that they can recall no other theft claim as large.
The county is optimistic that Travelers Insurance will cover most of the loss, said Chief Administrative Officer Harvey Kennedy. The county likely will be stuck absorbing a $138,000 loss because of a $25,000 deductible and a maximum $900,000 coverage in its $1,063,000 claim, he said.
And for the first time, the county is officially naming a suspect: Former bookkeeper Brandon Gunn is listed in the 57-page claim as the employee responsible for the thefts.
